Increased reach capabilities for Chela

Schiedam, Netherlands – November 12, 2018 – With Chela’s inherent safety and efficiency enhancing features as guiding principles, GustoMSC introduces an evolved design of this multifunctional lifting tool. With increased reach capability under the cantilever, Chela’s material handling and safety capabilities over the wellhead area are further improved.

Earlier this year GustoMSC announced that Maersk Drilling awarded the company the first order for the uniquely designed crane Chela. This was a landmark event that further accelerated Chela’s development. Prior to going into the fabrication, installation and commissioning phase, GustoMSC together with its client Maersk Drilling and their client AkerBP, have been closely working together to further improve Chela.

The most significant enhancement introduced into Chela is an increased reach capability under the cantilever, further improving its material handling and safety capabilities over the wellhead area. This has been achieved by introducing an additional “link”, which offers larger flexibility in movement of the lifting tip and thereby increasing reach and control of the supported object. The additional link enhances its crablike motion characteristics. Chela can reach below the cantilever as well as elevate and reach towards the main deck, providing crane access to an area
traditionally not accessible due to blocking of the access by the drilling cantilever. Its safety features allow these operations while simultaneously conducting operations on a well from the drill floor and without the need to shut-in other wells.
