Equipment & design contracts for the third Japanese WTI vessel

Houston, February 26, 2020 - NOV has been awarded the equipment package and design order for the second offshore wind turbine installation vessel by Japan-based Penta Ocean Construction. The GJ-9800C enables the efficient construction of 10-12 MW class offshore wind power generation turbines and will be the third NOV designed unit in the region.

NOV, through its offshore design and consultancy subsidiary GustoMSC, has worked closely with Penta Ocean on the customized jack-up design GJ-9800C, a derivative of the well-established GustoMSC series of self-propelled wind turbine installation jack-ups. The design is characterized by a total displacement of over 25,000 ton, has a total leg length of 92.5 meters and is capable of accommodating 80 persons. The dynamic positioning system keeps the hull in position with high precision, reducing positioning time required during jacking operations. The vessel will also be outfitted with a proprietary 9800t capacity GustoMSC jacking system, designed specifically for the specific demands of the offshore wind market. By jacking up the hull above seawater, the vessel ensures safe, efficient and highly precise crane operations even in the sea areas with severe meteorological and hydrographic conditions.

After being the frontrunner in providing advanced installation tools to the wind installation contractors in Europe, we are very pleased to partner again with Penta Ocean. We enjoy the close cooperation with our Japanese business partners and believe that this unit will make a significant contribution to further realization of Japan’s offshore wind ambitions”, says Nils van Nood VP Business Development for NOV Marine & Construction and Managing Director of GustoMSC.

The unit will be operated jointly by the three companies; Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd., Kajima Corporation and Yorigami Maritime Construction Co., Ltd. PaxOcean Engineering (Singapore) is responsible for the overall building of the SEP which is scheduled to be completed and delivered in September 2022 and operational in March 2023.
